Save your tooth with dental filling or root canal treatment

How is dental filling performed?

One of the most frequent reasons for patients to go to the dentist is dental filling treatment. Almost all of us have had dental filling treatment once or twice. Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to tooth root canals, nerve tissue and tissues surrounding the tooth. Endodontics specialist, according to the state of the tooth fill, fluoride or root canal treatment applies. Multiple endodontics specialists work at our clinic.
The bacterium that causes tooth decay is called Streptococcus. This bacterium reproduces in the tooth and over time forms decay in the tooth. Tooth decay also requires dental filling treatment. Before starting the process, the cavity inside the tooth is cleaned with a tool called special burs. If it is a very deep bruise, a protective layer is placed and insulation is provided to prevent hot-cold sensitivity. The dentist then decides which filler to use. Before the procedure, local anesthesia is applied so that the patient does not feel pain. In light dental filling procedures, even anesthesia may not be required. If the patient is compatible and calm, dental filling takes about 30 minutes. After the procedure, if silver filling is made, it should not be eaten for 2 hours until the filling material hardens, and if the beam filling is made, until the anesthetic effect passes. If irradiated filling was performed without applying anesthesia, the patient can eat and drink immediately.

Dental filling steps

Dental filling is the restoration of the cavity that occurs after all the caries and residues formed in a decaying tooth have been cleaned, with a substance that can remain in the mouth for a long time without causing problems in accordance with the normal form of that tooth. It is a method of restoring normal function and appearance to a tooth damaged by decay. Your dentist will first remove the decayed tooth tissue, clean the affected area and fill the cavity with filling material while applying filling treatment to you. It also tries to prevent the progression of decay by closing the spaces that bacteria can enter with filling. This is how the classically applied dental filling stages are. Let’s elaborate these steps a little more:

The first step is to clean the decay area on the surface of the tooth. If this cleaning process is going to be too deep, anesthetics can be done with a needle. Tooth decay is cleaned and cleaned with the help of the device used to clean teeth. In this way, an area is created where the filling material will be placed on the tooth.

After the decay zone in the tooth is completely free of decay, the step is to inject chemical filling material into this area and fill the cavity left by the decay with chemical filling material. There are different types of filling material and it can vary from patient to patient. That decision belongs to the dentist.

Then, before the filling is polished, the final stage is passed for treatment. The filling material injected into the cleaned area is brought to the appropriate shape for the tooth just before it is polished. Attention is paid to fill the space left behind by the decay of the filling material completely. The cavity should be filled in such a way as to prevent substances such as food residue from entering it. After that, the sharp parts of the tooth are shaved and finally the filling is polished and the treatment is completed.

Dental filling types

Although there are many types of fillers, there are 3 types of dental fillers that are commonly used. These are amalgam filling, composite filling and porcelain filling. It may not be appropriate to use the same filling for every patient and every tooth. Factors such as the patient’s allergy to substances, the location of the tooth, the size of the decay determine the type of filling to be preferred.

Amalgam Dental Fillings

Amalgam fillings, which are gradually decreasing in use in recent years, are mercury, silver, tin and copper mixture, especially used in the back teeth, resistant to pressure and chewing power and also cost effective. While the gray metallic color does not meet the aesthetic expectations, research on the possibility of an allergy to the mercury contained in the patient and the negative effects of mercury on human health has begun to reduce the use of this type of filling. In addition, amalgam fillings are not fully integrated with the tooth and there are losses from the healthy parts of the tooth while making it.

Composite Dental Fillings

Composite fillings, also known as white fillers, beam fillers or laser fillers, are white in color and a blue light filling device is used for curing. It consists of a plastic mixture with silicon dioxide particles. It can be used in both anterior and posterior teeth in terms of durability as well as aesthetically compatible. Inlay onlay is usually completed in one session, although two visits are required to your doctor. It is a slightly more expensive method than amalgam fillings. However, in cases such as broken, worn, intermittent teeth, it provides a suitable aesthetic solution.

Porcelain Dental Fillings

Among the filling types, the most compatible filling with the tooth is porcelain filling. In the first session, the tooth is prepared for filling, the measurement is taken and the patient is temporarily filled, and in the second session, the part prepared in the laboratory is glued to the tooth and polished. Porcelain fillings are very durable and there is no loss in texture. Its color is extremely harmonious with the tooth. The enamel is resistant to the hardness of the layer and is durable and long-lasting. Another advantage of porcelain fillers, which is the first choice reason for teeth with especially loss of substance, is that it does not abrade the teeth and is compatible with the gums. While other fillings do not meet the durability and aesthetic expectations sufficiently, the most important disadvantages of these fillings are; this requires two sessions of treatment and a more costly treatment method.
